Located on a peninsula in northern California and surrounded on three sides by water, the City of San Francisco is world famous for its hilly terrain, scenic views, cultural vitality, and Victorian architecture. Its setting on the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay create a dramatic backdrop for this vibrant urban center. An estimated 669,000 trees grow in San Francisco with approximately 13.7% of the city covered by tree canopy. This urban forest is almost entirely the result of human-initiated planting activities over the last 150 years. The city is developing an Urban Forest Plan containing a 20-year vision for trees and vegetation on the city’s streets, parks, and private properties. This chapter summarizes the development and implementation of Phase 1 (Street Trees) of the San Francisco Urban Forest Plan. |
