Popis: The velocity field in a magnetically deflected wall-stabilized arc was measured by means of small indicator particles. The object of investigation was an argon arc, burning at a pressure of one atmosphere in a cylindric vessel with a diameter of 10 mm. The current was varied from 0.6 to 2 A and the magnetic field between 2 and 8 Oe. In order to suppress disturbancies caused by free convection in the vessel, the measurements were performed at zero gravity in a free falling apparatus. The measured flow field forming a double whirl is in good correlation with theoretically derived values in other publications. Some integral results can be well understood from calculations performed for a simple one dimensional model.
