The mechanism of cationic polymerization of β-propiolactone in the alcohols and water

Popis: Taking as an example the polymerization of β-propiolactone in the presence of hydroxylic compounds with initiators of different types, it is shown that the hydroxomechanism observed previously in polymerization of β-propiolactone by oxonium salts in the presence of alcohols and water is universal and is independent of the nature of the initiator. The mechanism consists essentially in growth of the polymer chain through transfer to monomer. The greater stability of the monoalkyloxonium ion (the active centre in the hydroxo-mechanism) in comparison with the acyl ion, makes the hydroxo-process relatively insensitive to the nature of the counter ion. The hydroxo-mechanism is confirmed by NMR-1H analysis.
