The work of Kurt W. Forster on Aby Warburg established a landmark in the field of Warburgian studies: Forster in fact edited the first English edition of Warburg's Gesammelte Schriften (The Renewal of Pagan Antiquity, Los Angeles 1999). Forster's latest essay, The Past in Gestures, the Future in Memory recently published by Edizioni Engramma (Venice 2020), outlines Warburg’s Kulturwissenschaft as a dynamic method, a 'cardan joint' at the intersection of different disciplines, which - also on the basis of Benjamin’s acknowledgement of the new statute of images, and the new horizons opened by neurological and anthropological studies at the beginning of the last century - has been in turn capable of transmitting its own energy of unprecedented heuristic device to the interpretation of the single works studied by Warburg, as well as to the development of visual studies up to contemporary artistic practice. We present here an excerpt from the book's first chapter. |
