This chapter explores the first stage of the reentry process through the narratives of men and women who are about to finish their prison sentences. Based on 78 interviews with male and female adult prisoners in two Portuguese prisons, analyses explore the gender differences in the reentry process, specifically examining prisoners’ (i) perceptions of incarceration’s impact on prisoners’ reentry process and (ii) expectations after their release. Results reveal the specificities and convergences of men’s and women’s reentry narratives and suggest how differences in prison facilities, criminal histories, social constructions of gender, and the Portuguese context influence the reentry processes of prisoners. |
