Popis: From apparatus originally constructed to determine very low creep rates in lightly stressed materials at elevated temperatures, the equipment has evolved to cover a much broader range of applications. The essential features of the equipment involve the continual recording of strain caused by thermal or mechanical changes that can be made incrementally on material in the form of a helical coil or straight wire contained in a vacuum vessel. Thus the variation with temperature of such properties as shear and Young's moduli, thermal expansion coefficients, electrical resistivity, anelastic and creep behaviour can be determined. Information on phase changes and behaviour during phase changes under stress can also be obtained and total emissivity evaluated. Details of the equipment and experimental procedures are described and some examples are given of the results obtained, emphasizing their value for educational purposes.
