Popis:	Five million children and adolescents under 18 years of age in the United States will die prematurely from smoking-related diseases if current patterns of smoking persist. The commonest source of tobacco for minors is the retail store. We designed a large study to evaluate the community context in which tobacco sales to minors occur. We asked 16-year-old girls to attempt to buy tobacco in 725 stores in 20 communities and conducted telephone surveys with 579 store managers, 449 clerks and 151 community leaders to assess knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding tobacco sales to minors.
