Growing concern about environment, traffic congestion and excessive fuel conception call for a fresh look at mass transit systems in a city like Kochi. There are several mass rapid transit systems that can help improve the problems faced by the city. The metro is one such solution to public transportation that has been successfully implemented in many parts of the world. However a metro is not achievable in every region. There are different modes of mass transit systems such as Light Rail Transits that would benefit the public so that traffic congestion in the city can be reduced (Sanghi and Variya 2013). This paper includes a study on the implementation of Light Rail Transit from Thoppumpady to Goshree as this route does not have the provision of a direct bus, and consist mostly of one way streets, thus making travel time consuming. Reconnaissance survey and various necessary surveys are conducted to study the ridership demand and the condition of the existing route. Finally, based on the collected data, the paper aims to justify the viability of a Light rail transit system in a route connecting Thoppumpady and Goshree. |
