The identification of chlorophyll c in the Tribophyceae (= Xanthophyceae) using spectrophotofluorometry

Popis:	As previous investigations employing chromatography indicated that not all species of the Tribophyceae contain chlorophyll c, we have used fluorometry as a more sensitive method of detection. Fluorescence-emission at 634 nm, characteristic of chlorophyll c. appeared as a peak or shoulder on the spectrophotofluorometer traces when solutions of lipid-soluble pigments extracted from 30 cultures of species referred to the Tribophyceae were excited at 453 nm. All extracts examined by thin-layer chromatography contained diadinoxanthin but not violaxanthin, the diepoxy xanthophyll found in the class Eustigmatophyceae, thus confirming that the species that were examined belonged to the Tribophyceae.
