Development of secretory trichomes was followed on Myriophyllum spicatum L. leaves and stem. Secretory trichomes occurred on very young plants and abscised early, leaving behind a scar. Analysis of the chemical composition indicated that Myriophyllum trichomes contain polysaccharides and lipophilic substances. Little is known about the process of excretion, however, it appeared to be of the holocrine type. On non-axenic plants, bacteria, zooplankton and other organisms accelerated the deterioration and disappearance of the trichomes. The release of dissolved organic products by these secretory structures was investigated and their possible ecological functions are discussed. |
