Purpose This paper provides a resource to Australia's trade negotiators at the World Trade Organization (WTO). The report summarises evidence to demonstrate to other WTO members that reforming agricultural support and opening trade can build a more competitive agricultural sector. Key findings • Agriculture can be economically important in a country’s development. • Government support for agriculture globally remains significant. However, in countries with high levels of support programs can have adverse outcomes: they can divert investment from other sectors of the economy and reduce economic growth. • Reforming support improves economic and environmental outcomes and supports a long-term sustainable agricultural sector. |
