This report presents the results of archaeological monitoring and recording that was carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) for a commercial development at Hansons Garage, Castle Street, Combe Martin, Devon. A series of foundation trenches across an area that measured 31.55m wide by 15.75m wide and 0.90m deep were excavated by machine using a grading bucket and under archaeological supervision. The stratigraphy of the site was comprised of: stone and brick rubble within mid grey-brown friable silt levelling material (104), tarmac and concrete surfaces (100/117), stone rubble within mid brown-grey friable silt made ground (101), dark brown friable soft silt clay buried soil (102), mid grey-brown soft silt clay subsoil (106), and banded shillet within soft yellow and brown-yellow clay natural (103). A total of four features were identified across the site, including: one pit; one wall; one drain; and one modern service. Only a small quantity of finds was recovered during the works, including: one sherd (11g) of glazed 18th-19th century North Devon gravel tempered ware; one fragment (28g) of ceramic tile; and three fragments (93g) of green bottle glass. The finds were subsequently discarded. The results of the archaeological monitoring and recording indicated that there were no significant archaeological deposits present, and no significant archaeological features were identified. The artefactual evidence indicates that modern soil layers overlie the natural and subsoil layers, whilst the four features are likely to be associated with the former 20th century garage. |
