Popis: | To offer possible explanation for varying prevalence of gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) as reported from Indian studies. The prevalence at the local hospital facility was compared with that available from published reports from India. Net-search for indexed articles was made keying the words for genetic aspects of GTD. The prevalence of GTD was 1.35 per 1000 births (25 cases of 18,472 deliveries over 2 years) at hospitals attached to a medical college in Mangaluru, Karnataka. To compare the prevalence, five representative Indian publications were available. And for theorizing genetic link, 44 different articles could be reviewed. The prevalence was three times less frequent than in neighboring Calicut and similar to the ones reported from north India. Two reports from central India had prevalence between 1.68 and 2.9 per 1000 deliveries. Women in Dakshina Kannada were reported to have preponderance of blood group type B like that in north India. Women in Calicut (Kerala) have predominantly O and A blood types and Y-chromosome haplogroups similar to those from high-risk countries. Different genetic lineage of the two states and similarity of genetic lineage of Kerala to high-risk ethnic races explain the difference in prevalence. The reasons for the different rate in central India need to be explained. |
