In this chapter, I discuss the possibility that writing for publication might not become easier over time but more difficult, even for educated native speakers of English. After describing how writing for publication does get easier, I point out ways that over time the activity can simultaneously become more difficult. The difficulty increases because successful writing for publication does not depend primarily on language proficiency, but on other complex factors that affect L1 and L2 scholars alike, such as inquiry and thinking skills, expertise that develops over time, and tenacity. I conclude with the message that, rather than becoming easier, writing for publication should become more challenging as academic writers involve themselves in continuous learning and in increasingly complex and interesting projects in their fields. |
