Popis: I share the view that Western Civilization is undergoing a crisis of authority at all institutional levels of authority. I also believe that the crisis is more profound than at any time in Western history since that complex of forces, beliefs and values that gave rise to the Renais? sance and, especially, the post-Renaissance revolutions?though not for the same reasons. We must admit, though, that there is no self evident connection between a civilization-wide authority crisis and an increase in movements toward community autonomy. Historically, I think a connection can be shown. But I am not an historian. In any event, whether the connection is logical, historical or accidental, it is a fact of current history that demands for community autonomy are everywhere on the increase. Thus, the important questions would seem to be: 1) what important issues or concerns motivate the in? creasing demands for community autonomy and 2) whether the in? creasing number of such groups is evidence of "revolt or restoration or . . . ?" My presentation, as the title indicates, is primarily con? cerned with the latter, with the overall political implications of com? munity autonomy rather than with specific issues and motives of groups demanding autonomy. In order to do that I think it is im? portant briefly to cast the autonomy movement alongside analogous movements in our society and within an historical framework.
