Popis: | For pt.I see ibid., vol.13, no.2 (1992). When an electron moving on a periodic lattice is reflected from a massive obstacle, the force on the obstacle depends on its precise location. If it is free to move, however, the average force is determined by the pseudo-momentum h(cross)k+ng, where g is the reciprocal lattice vector and the value for n is shown to be unambiguously defined. The relation between momentum and pseudo-momentum is studied through the Kronig-Penney model. It is shown that an electronic wavepacket carries lattice momentum along with it, and further that when an electron is accelerated by an applied force its wavefunction is distorted to the extent necessary to conserve momentum through lattice recoil. |
