Popis: | GENOTOXICITY TESTING OF HERBAL PREPARATIONS - A CONTRIBUTION TO DISCUSSIONThis contribution will examine the question of whether an Ames test conducted according to the requirements set by OECD is an adequate test design within the scope of genotoxicity testing for herbal preparations known and available on the market. In a review written by Wiesner and Knoss in this journal, which is referred to here, the authors point out that a product-specific assessment must be performed as to which genotoxicity tests have to be conducted and which experimental design is appropriate in that respect. In doing so the authors leave the question open whether or not in individual cases experimental variations in addition to the standard procedure according to OECD are also necessary product-specifically and/or whether the data generated in compliance with the standard requirements can be sufficient. In this contribution arguments will be complementarily compiled, intending to contribute to justifying the applicability of the standard procedure SUI GENERIS and/or to invalidate arguments provided by Wiesner and Knoss which question the suitability of the standard procedure. In this context the focus lies on the fact that neither the degradation of glycosidic secondary products to the corresponding aglycones evident in the human body nor their biotransformation to phase II reaction products is covered by the experimental design of the standard requirements for the AMES test according to OECD. |
