Popis: Ion activity and solution speciation theory should be incorporated in environmental geochemistry courses. The toxicity of some elements changes with both the oxidation state and the type of complex in which the element is present. Important concepts of ion activity and speciation can be demonstrated through the titration of alkalinity either potentiometrically or using an indicator. Results from the titration can be processed using a spreadsheet compiled by the author for the automated speciation of alkalinity. Additional educational goals also met by the practical exercise include the use of computers and mathematical calculation.
