rDNA sequence analysis confirms the distinction between Colletotrichum graminicola and C. sublineolum

Popis:	Nucleotide sequences of the rDNA internally transcribed spacer 2 (ITS-2) of isolates of C. graminicola from maize, sorghum and Rottboellia were determined. Analysis of the results showed that within isolates from maize and within those from sorghum and Rottboellia sequences were highly homologous (98–100%), whereas homology between these groups of isolates was 92%. A comparison of the level of homologies with and between other species of Colletotrichum indicates that the isolates from maize represent a species distinct from that which contains the isolates obtained from sorghum and Rottboellia. This confirms previous morphological and genetic studies. It is recommended that the isolates from maize should be regarded as C. graminicola, those from sorghum and Rottboellia as C. sublineolum.
