Popis: Stents are mesh-like tubular devices implanted to hold open stenosed arteries and restore blood flow. Injury to the vessel wall during stent implantation leads to a cascade of biological events producing, among other reactions, inflammation, restenosis and thrombotic response. Polymer-based coatings have been tried to circumvent these problems, with varying degrees of success. However, cases of thrombosis related to stents remain a concern. This chapter attempts to look into various antithrombotic passive and preventative coatings reported in the literature and evaluates their potential for stent-coating application.
