The ease of converting from one unit to another is a major convenience of the metric system. Most of us find it much easier to convert meters to centimeters than to convert yards to inches. A skill needed for converting a measure from one metric unit to another is the ability to multiply or divide by a power of ten, often 10,100, or 1000. To change 6.32 meters to centimeters, for example, one has to multiply by 100. Some students, unfortunately, have to resort to a fairly long, time-consuming process (fig. 1). For these students, converting yards to inches is almost as easy and so, for them, a big advantage of the metric system goes unnoticed. |
