In this work, wavy micro channels applied as a heat sink to improve heat transfer in the electronic devices for chip cooling are investigated. A two-dimensional study of laminar fluid flow and heat transfer was performed using ANSYS Fluent software. For different Reynolds number, wavy features, i.e. wavelength and amplitude of the micro channel were varied to obtain the optimum configuration for overall performance improvement. Two different types of wavy channels were considered, and their thermal performance for a constant wall heat flux of 20 W/m2 was compared with the straight channel. The results show that when coolant flows through the wavy micro channels, secondary flow (Dean Vortices) was generated. It was found that the quantity and location of vortices also change along the flow direction which greatly enhances the convective fluid mixing and thus improves the heat transfer performance of the present wavy micro channels. Further, the pressure drop penalty of present wavy micro channels was much smaller than the heat transfer enhancement. |
