Popis: | The ion trajectories for a heavy ion beam probe (HIBP) diagnostic for the National Spherical Torus experiment NSTX are simulated. The National Spherical Torus experiment (NSTX) equilibria modeled include both low β and high β (β=23%) discharges. The simulation used a sodium ion beam with energies varying from 350 to 550 keV. Sodium is used to minimize attenuation in the large NSTX plasma. The energy range and beam deflection limits are consistent with existing equipment. The locations of the effective ion source and detector points were varied with the goal of maximizing the plasma coverage for both low β and high β discharges while minimizing the port space required. The effective source and detector locations are determined by the location of electrostatic steering plates. The optimal design may require crossover sweep systems such as those used on the Madison Symmetric Torus (MST) HIBP. The distance of the accelerator (source) and energy analyzer (detector) from NSTX can be increased with some reductio... |
