Popis: A brief discussion of the organization and requirements of Marine Corps artillery leads into a review of the history behind the adoption of the M198 155mm howitzer by the Marine Corps as its direct support artillery weapon system. The basis for the relatively recent return of the M101A1 105mm howitzer in a dual caliber role with the M198 in direct support units updates the historical picture to reflect the current artillery structure. An analysis of the present-day artillery structure in the Marine Corps is conducted with the conclusion that the structure should be modified to enhance the mobility of the artillery regiment, while increasing the artillery's ability to respond across the contingency spectrum. Specific recommendations address changes to both active and reserve artillery structures.
