Popis: This chapter sketches the transition from a single logic of production under fordism (mass production with scientific management) to two complementary but distinct logics under postfordism (lean production and worker empowerment). It then presents an overview of the study. The analysis of the field begins with a description of its organizational ecology and a demonstration that a highly specified model of lean production has been institutionalized, along with a substantive model of worker empowerment, as best practice. Then, using qualitative data fortified by statistical data from a sample of the same field, the chapter explains how the postfordist field has been institutionalized in a way that permits substantial variation in organizational performance, including a small number of highly efficient firms and a large number of relatively inefficient firms.
