Popis: Service experience of composite insulators worldwide is generally considered to be similar to that of glass cap and pin insulators. However, composite insulators can be of different quality and this aspect is not fully covered by existing IEC standards. A few after-service investigations confirmed that the root cause of failures of composite insulators in service was poor adhesion at the interface between the fibreglass core and the silicone rubber housing. The goal of this work was to develop a new practical test method to reveal low adhesion of composite insulators by limited and, in the first hand, sample testing of the larger batches of already purchased insulators before the installation. The combination of two tests (water diffusion and pull-off) are considered as representative, repeatable and cost-effective. The implementation of these tests in the IEC 62217/61109, which at present are under revision, is proposed and this requires only minor changes in the text of the IEC standard. The Round Robin Tests to evaluate the reproducibility of the test in different laboratories are planned in the nearest time.
