Popis: "I really would like to go to the office tomorrow. I have so much to do." These words were spoken to his son, John, by Milton Harris, 85, just 10 minutes before he died (C&EN, Sept. 23, page 6). They are clearly the words of an optimist—of a man who dwelt on the bright side, without being unaware of the dark. They are typical of the forward-looking attitude that characterized everything Harris said or did throughout a successful professional career and a long and productive life. Milton was no "cockeyed optimist." His rosy view of the future had firm roots in his thoughtful examination of past and present, and in his confidence in the constantly evolving creativity and leadership he perceived in oncoming generations of young people. "Certainly the future is filled with uncertainties," he once observed. "But in my experience the optimists generally have been proven better realists than the pessimists." ...
