Popis: | The current laboratory work studied the effect of radio frequency of atmospheric plasma on red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) (Order: Coleopteran, Family: Tenebrionidae), under the influence of three different factors. Two types of inert gas, helium (He) and argon (Ar), two levels of power (50,100 watt) and different exposure times (0, 20, 40, 60 or 90 s). The results indicated that plasma has a lethal effect on the pest, a positive relationship was observed between exposure times and average mortality with two power levels. The highest adult mortality 100% occurred in He- plasma treatment for 90 s at 100-watt power level after 24 h of treatment. An increase in exposure time to the plasma caused a gradual decrease in first progeny (F1) for both inert gases. The reduction in F1was dependent upon both time of exposure and power level during the irradiation. These results demonstrate that radio frequency atmospheric plasma might be a promising non-chemical method for pest control and could be incorporated into this pest management. |
