Popis: An archaeological trial trench evaluation was undertaken on the site of proposed residential development on land at 80 London Road, Peterborough. The site is located to the south of Peterborough City Centre and on the southern side of the River Nene in an area known as New Fletton. The trial trenching was commissioned by Smart Move Properties in response to advice from the Peterborough City Archaeologist that the site is in an archaeologically sensitive area, particularly in respect of Anglo-Saxon settlement and funerary remains recorded nearby. The earliest features revealed were linear cuts interpreted as probable furrows from former open-field cultivation of the area. Subsequent features indicated an episode of Post-medieval gravel extraction and refuse disposal at the site, followed by the construction of a substantial dwelling at the south-western edge of the site with associated gardens which extended over the rest of the development area. Features and deposits were also recorded which represented disturbance from demolition of the building and clearance of the site in the recent past. The finds assemblage recovered during the project comprised fragments of pottery, glass, brick, tile, iron and clay tobacco pipe. The finds were overwhelmingly of Post-medieval date, and mostly derived from 19th or 20th century utilisation of the site.
