Popis: A 3-year-old male neutered rabbit was diagnosed with rabbit gastrointestinal syndrome after 3 days of anorexia and lethargy. Radiographic images revealed gas accumulation in the small intestines and cecum. Medical management was attempted but after 36 hours of medical and supportive care the patient became more lethargic and hypothermic. Repeat diagnostic imaging showed increased gas present within the intestines and the cecum. Exploratory abdominal surgery was performed and an obstruction of the proximal colon was identified, along with an adhesion of the jejunum to the obstruction site. The adhesion was carefully dissected from the proximal colon and the obstruction was successfully removed. Due to severe compromise of the wall of the bowel at the obstruction site, an intestinal resection and approximating end to end anastomosis was performed. Recovery was uneventful and 10 weeks postoperatively the patient was reported to be doing well.
