This paper presents a probabilistic approach to the process of defining prescriptive requirements for concrete exposed to carbonation. The approach is based on the philosophy given in the European standard EN 1990(1) (Basic Structural Design), meaning that the failure reliability 'Z' is calculated as the difference between a resistance against failure 'R' and an environmental load or action 'F'. Both resistance and load are expressed in a probabilistic manner. A new European standard EN 206-1(2) is used as an example, but the presented principle may be used in other situations where corrosive environments are a consideration. |
