Popis: A recent study on the textures in strip-cast AA3105 aluminum alloy suggests that ultrasonic measurement of the texture coefficient W400 would provide a promising means for on-line monitoring of textures in this alloy. Ultrasonic measurement of W400 in aluminum alloys, however, has long been an outstanding research problem in nondestructive evaluation. In this paper we report our preliminary findings on the feasibility of using the velocity ratio k≡V33 12 (V31+V32) for measurement of W400 in strip-cast AA3105 alloy; here V33 denotes the speed of longitudinal wave propagating in the normal direction of a sample sheet; V31 and V32 are speeds of through-thickness shear waves with polarization in the rolling and transverse direction, respectively. Samples of a commercial strip-cast. AA3105 hot band were annealed and cold rolled under various conditions to simulate a broad range of texture conditions. The velocity ratio k and the texture coefficient W400 of these samples were measured by ultrasonics and by X-ray diffraction, respectively. Our preliminary results indicate that the data points for the k versus W400 plot fall along two parallel straight lines. Roughly speaking, the data points pertaining to samples which were sufficiently annealed fall on one line and those corresponding to samples which were sufficiently cold rolled fall on another. Possible implications of this finding on the broader problem of ultrasonic measurement of W400 in aluminum alloys are discussed.
