One of the key mediators in maintaining endothelial function is endothelium-derived nitric oxide, which is often released due to the frictional force generated by blood flow (shear stress). Flavanols present in cocoa (Theobroma cocao L.) have been shown to significantly improve flow-mediated dilatation (FMD), a measure of endothelial function. In part, cocoa flavanols may mediate the release of nitric oxide, which improves FMD, and as such they may be considered anti-atherogenic. Human studies submitted to the European Food Safety Authority demonstrated the bioavailability, plausibility, and health relationship of the Acticoa® brand of cocoa flavanols, and an authorised health claim has been awarded under Article 13(5) of the nutrition and health claims regulation. Acticoa® is now commercially available across the European Union, and future challenges are to find a food format to carry the cocoa flavanol approved health claims that consumers accept. |
