There is truth in the axiom that the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior, suggesting that archeology has much to offer psychology. And, just as psychology gained much through its interdisciplinary involvement with cognitive science, an analogous embrace of cognitive archaeology holds the potential for similar insights—in this case, into our understanding of the evolution of the human mind. This introductory chapter provides several extended examples of what such a collaboration might actually look like as well as a consideration of the specific benefits to be gained. As suggested in this introduction, matters concerning our tribalistic nature, or use of tools, our child-rearing practices, our expressions of gender and sexuality, our sleep patterns, as well as the nature of warfare, cultural practices, and the origins of religion all stand as representative topics of interest to contemporary psychology that can assuredly be illuminated by the data of archaeology. |
