Popis: Trigeminal Neuralgia is a chronic pain disorder that can be difficult to diagnose and treat. Peripheral neurectomy is a minimally invasive surgical method of destruction of a peripheral branch or more of the trigeminal nerve that can be carried out as an outpatient procedure and is indicated for patients who have failed medical therapy, gangliolysis, or have severe cardiopulmonary disease and are unable to tolerate a suboccipital craniectomy for microvascular decompression. It can be repeated; however, the risk of neuroma formation increases and the rate of success reduces. Peripheral neurectomies are not recommended for routine purposes, since it provides inferior quality and duration of pain relief when compared with standard neurosurgical procedures. Nevertheless, Peripheral neurectomy is a safe and effective procedure for the elderly, patients living in remote and rural places with a lack of neurosurgical facilities, and for patients with contraindications or reluctance for major neurosurgical procedures.
