A stratigraphical synthesis is proposed for a large area of Moinian (late pre-Cambrian) rocks in the northwestern Highlands of Scotland. Lewisian basement occurs in central Ross-shire as a sheet-like body found at a high stratigraphic level within the Moinian (Sutton and Watson, 1962). We suggest that the Lewisian sheet is separated from the underlying rocks by a major tectonic discontinuity, or slide, which may be delineatedfor a distance of over 250 km. The age of this slide is discussed in relation to the regional structural and metamorphic history of the Moinian. |
