Use of a linear stapler in pharyngeal closure after total laryngectomy

Popis:	Use of linear staplers in closure of the pharynx after total laryngectomy is not yet a routine procedure. We report our experience in application of this device in 19 patients undergoing total laryngectomy, 4 of whom suffered from a pharyngeal fistula. This complication incidence of 21% falls inside accepted fistula formation rates, and should not hinder the use of staplers in these cases. Such closure of the pharyngeal gullet has been shown to be a quick, effective, and safe method, shortening the length of the surgical procedure and thus reducing related complications and expenses. We recommend the use of a linear stapler for closure of the pharyngeal defect after laryngectomy.
