Popis: | 1. The fatty acid composition and cholesterol/phospholipid molar ratio of lipids extracted from subcellular fractions of 5–6, 10, and 20 day chick embryo heart and from adult chicken heart were determined. 2. The fraction of saturated fatty acids decreases steadily during embryonic and post-hatching development. 3. The cholesterol/phospholipid molar ratio decreases between 5–6 and 10 days of embryonic life, increases somewhat between 10 and 20 days of incubation, and decreases again during post-hatching development. 4. The pattern of changes in lipid composition is similar in the plasma membrane enriched fraction, the fraction enriched in mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum, and in the homogenate. 5. The changes in the fatty acid composition and cholesterol/phospholipid molar ratio that occur during development are consistent with developmental changes in the microviscosity of the plasma membrane enriched fraction that we previously reported. |
