The conventional form of the Bumen equations, originating in 1939, have been shown in recent yean to yield much more realistic shock shuc~res than the Navier-Stokes equations. An inherent part of the conventional Bumen equations. unfortunately. is an inviscid, isentropic approximation for the materia! derivative present in both the viscous stress and hear conduction expressions of the original Bumett equations of 1935. Alternate forms for the Bumett viscous suess and heat flux arc investigated herein using the exact material derivative definition without approximation. and also using an improved approximation for the material derivatives based on Navier-Stokes rather than inviscid. isentropic equations. A similar investigation has been carried out for the Bumen-order equations recently developed by Woods. The various Bumcrt-order constitutive equations an studicd to determine stability to sd wavelength disturbances. and numerical accuracy for a one dimensional shock shucture. Bumen formulations which do not make some approximation to the material derivatives arc shown to reveal a new type of problem lcading to physically unreal heat conduction. Two modified Bumen-order formulations arc developed which greatly minimize this problem while simultaneously improving thc accuracy of shock smcturc computations. |
