Selective Action of Dyes and of Other Disinfectants on Bacteriophages

Popis:	In a previous report1 we showed that there is a selective action of crystal violet and of brilliant green on bacteriophages. It had been demonstrated by others 2 that methylene blue and toluidine blue inactivate staphylococcus phages when the proper procedures are followed. However, some of these investigators 2a failed to get positive results with crystal violet, brilliant green or gentian violet. It was found necessary in our former work to use high concentrations of the dyes, correlated with variable incubation periods and temperatures, in order to produce the desired results. When this was done, the data appeared to show some correlation between the selective action of crystal violet on bacteria and that on their respective phages. The results further indicated that the reactions followed the Gram rule
