Pain in a complex pediatric patient is commonly seen by the palliative care provider. To adequately care for these patients, providers perform a systematic process of assessment followed by a stepwise approach to pain management interventions. Pediatric patients present unique challenges in pain management due to varying developmental stages, limited language development, and challenges in characterizing and localizing pain. Additionally, pediatric patients lack the insight that may be offered from older and developmentally more mature patients. Pediatric pain management plans take additional factors such as non-pain symptoms that present similar to pain into consideration and require careful consideration of medication administration routes and concentrations. Successful plans often entail pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions and support both the child and family. |
