The preparation of irradiated nuclear fuel materials with dibutyl ether as the extraction means has, in comparison with the Purex Process (extraction with tributyl phosphate), several advantages: higher decontamination factors, lower tendency for emulsion formation and therefore simpler handling in the extraction column and mixer-settler, smaller volumes in the washing phase for the rewashing of the uranium-containing products out of the solvent phase, and extensive relinquishing to a purification of the solvent Phase (washing with diluted nitric acid is sufficient). As a disadvantage is the use of calcium nitrate as salting out agent since this is scarcely recoverable and therefore the solid content of the radioactive waste is raised significantly. (tr-auth) |
