Popis: The effects of different periods with or without weeds in beet, cv. Tall Top Early Wonder, were evaluated. The treatments consisted of maintaining the culture in the presence or absence of weeds for periods of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90 days after transplantation and direct sowing. Taking into account both crop yield and quality, the critical period for preventing weed interference for direct sowing beets was from 20 to 50 days after sowing. For transplanted beets, the total period where the crop should be kept free from weeds was 20 days and the period that precedes the interference was 30 days, both after transplantation. A single weed control, between 20 and 30 days after transplantation, should be enough to prevent weed interference
