In normal adult organisms, water occupies approximately 60% of total body weight, and is distributed among three major compartments, vascular, interstitial and cellular, representing 5 %, 15% and 40%, respectively (33). Absolute and/or relative abnormalities in water and solute distribution, not surprisingly, are found in a variety of diseases, until now considered as specific and distinct morbid entities (22, 31, 41). The primary etiology of disease may vary, from physical and chemical injury, neoplasia, ischemia, nutriment deficiency and metabolic disorders, to infection and immune aggression. However, the basis of healing and/or progression of disease has a common denominator which we would propose to localize in the interstitial matrix (25). |
