Popis: The DIGGS Markup Language (DIGGSML) is a GML compliant XML framework that can be customised to allow local implementations and variations to be specified. This powerful feature has given the geotechnical community an opportunity to contribute to a single, truly international, data dictionary for geotechnics. This enables individual companies, government organisations, national associations and international bodies to benefit and modify the current framework without making the significant investment that has already been made. This paper explains the process and best practices of extending the DIGGS Markup Language framework to cover locally important data and issues, including how to specify extensions for objects not currently covered by the framework, how to specify extensions to change existing objects and best management practice. Using the DIGGS Markup Language framework to construct a national geotechnical dictionary and transfer format is not difficult, but due to the flexibility of the framework's XML implementation it could be done in many ways. This paper illustrates the best practice by use of examples.
