Today’s companies find themselves exposed to an increasingly dynamic and turbulent business environment. High market volatility, mass customization as well as disruptive innovations and a growing intensity of competition exert considerable pressure on companies. At the same time, companies have strengthened their internationalisation of production in recent decades to gain competitive advantages. Therefore, complexity in production and the number of possible factors influencing the production network additionally increased. As a result, producing companies often have historically grown, suboptimal production networks. In order to ensure long-term competitiveness production networks need to be designed in a way that allows a quick adaption to new challenges. Traditional approaches to the design of global production networks only take limited account of this aspect. |
