Popis: The accurate characterization of hydrodynamic flowfields in channels, streams, and river floodplanes, as well as large confined bodies of water, is an important requirement. Historically, as has occurred in almost every branch of engineering., the hydraulics laboratory served the major purpose by permitting acquisition of pertinent data on scaled models of the physical configuration. In the United States, the U.S. Army Waterways Experiment Station and TVA Norris Engineering Laboratory exemplify the concept. The emergence of the digital computer, and its phenomenal recent rate of maturation, is introducing the near-term capability to conduct numerical experiments on a mathematical model of certain engineering configurations. Aerodynamics is probably foremost in an advanced numerical analysis capability, yet even now only an elementary potential flow computer simulation can be conducted for a completely configured airplane. And while the National Laboratory wind tunnels will probably never be used to store computer output, most importantly, the cost of computer simulation is actually declining, while the physical simulation costs are steadily increasing.
