The dating of the shellmound at Chiba-city was determined using an electron spin resonance method. Prior to dating, the effect of crushing or grinding of shell was studied in relation to the ESR signal. To eliminate the grinding or crushing effect, the samples were etched with hydrochloric acid solution. The dose per year at the sampling point of the shellmound was determined using a Mg 2 SiO 4 (Tb)- and CaSO 4 (Tm)-thermoluminescent dosimeter. The type of shell used was a determing f factor in the accuracy of the ESR measurement. The age of Kosari-shellmound at Chiba-city was estimated to be approximately 4200 years old. |
