The current trend in the design of large, high performance optical systems is to fabricate the reflecting surfaces from segments, rather than from a single piece of material. The dynamical behavior of a segmented optical system can be analyzed using a finite element model. This is a complicated and expensive procedure which requires a detailed knowledge of the design of the structure. This paper describes a technique for developing a simplified model which is sufficient to obtain a qualitative understanding of the effects of coupling between the various structural and optical components. |
