The thermal degradation of polystyrene (PS) has been investigated over a temperature range of 300–570° by the pyrolytic gas chromatography method, with pulsed conditions of pyrolysis and microgramme portions of polymer. Separate stages in the thermal degradation of PS are seen in the light of a quantitative analysis of the degradation products. It is shown that given strict temperature control of the process of pyrolysis the thermal degradation of PS takes place by a chain mechanism with a monomer yield of practically 100%. The activation energy E for the thermal degradation of PS is estimated on the basis of the total material balance for the degradation products obtained at different temperatures. Having found the value of E it is then possible for direct estimates to be made of the bond energy of carbon atoms in the polymer chain. |
